Tiny House Building Workshop

The workshop series will take place at the Vancouver Community Laboratory on Saturday & Sunday mornings 9-12 , July 5 through August 31. 

To participate in workshops, students must complete one of the mandatory safety trainings.

Next Safety Training takes place July 6th,12-2pm.

What you get

Talented, knowledgeable teachers who are experts on the subjects of tiny houses and all parts of the build including: trailer and foundation selection and prep, carpentry, finishing, design, plumbing, electrical and solar.

 

Josh Armstrong: Carpenter, set  builder and bamboo bike designer for the local eco bike company Grass Frames, Josh has built and made more houses, sets and projects than he can count. A master builder with an engineering mind,  Josh will teach you everything you need to know about the science behind framing, roofing, flooring and finishing. Includes construction theory, hands on learning, question periods and worksheets.

 

Ben Garrett: Our Australian electrician and builder of 'chemical free tiny houses'. Ben has experience building, designing and instructing a wide variety of natural building workshops including tiny houses and earthships. Ben will be showing participants how to install their plumbing and grey water systems, pre-wire their houses safely & how to calculate their energy usage for solar systems.

 

John McFarlane: Architecture grad, designer and owner of Camera Buildings, a local tiny house company, John regularly designs and builds tiny houses for use for home studios and living spaces.  John is eager to pass on his knowledge of building, codes, regulations and design considerations to participants interested in learning more about how to design efficient small spaces..

 

Nathyn Sanche: As a Red Seal Welder, Nathyn will guide the class through the process of how to identify and select a sturdy trailer, identify common problems/fixes and how to strip any unwanted parts off to prep for your build.

Saturday July 5 (3 hour workshop)

General Introduction to Tiny Homes & Building Small

Whether you are interested or unsure if you want to build a tiny house, this workshop is for you!

Learn about legality & expected costs,  explore your design layout, learn about safety, loads, egress, building envelope & provisions for energy and waste. 
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about our other workshops this summer!

Note: This workshop does not require a safety orientation. If you are considering signing up for future workshops, all participants must attend a mandatory safety orientation prior to the workshop date. Safety Orientations dates are posted here

Sunday July 6 (3 hour workshop)

Trailers & Foundations

Whether you are building on a foundation or a trailer, this 1 day workshop will provide you with the knowledge you need to start the first step in your tiny house build. Red Seal welder Nathyn Sanche will guide you through the process of choosing a suitable & sturdy trailer, while Carpenter Josh Armstrong will teach you all about building a solid foundation for those of you building on the ground.

Saturday July 12 & Sunday July 13 (6 hour/2 day workshop)

Tiny House Workshop 3: Floor Systems & Building Efficiently

Whether you are a novice or total beginner, this 2 day workshop will provide you with the knowledge you need to be confident using tools & set up your shop for your tiny house build.

From building sets in a fast paced film industry, carpenter Josh Armstrong and designer & tiny house company owner John McFarlane will teach you their tips & tricks to make your build run efficient, smooth & quick!

1. Shop setup/organization/ storage of tools

4. Framing for Trailer or Foundation

5. Calculating the number of joists and rim-joists/stringers

6. Keeping water out of the bottom of the house.

Saturday July 19, Sunday July 20 & Saturday July 26 (9 hour/3 day workshop)

Building & Standing Walls/Roof Framing

With the help of carpenter Josh Armstrong, this 3 day workshop will teach students will learn how to determine layout & will begin building walls. Students will also learn how a roof on a tiny house on a trailer is different than a conventional roof for a tiny house on a foundation. Students will learn how to safely install & secure a roof on their tiny house.

1. Basic math in determining framing

4. Framing for soffit overhangs and cantilevers

5. Securing the roof=no flyaways!

8. Installing strapping or sheeting membrane and fascia

July 27 & August 2 (6 hour/2 day workshop)

Building Envelope Part 1 & 2

Students will learn how to seal & protect a tiny house from penetration of water & will learn how to detail the ornamental aspects of the exterior of a tiny house.

Envelope Part 2

1. Window and door trim

August 3rd (3 hour workshop)

Plumbing & Water Systems

This workshop outlines everything you need to know regarding options for plumbing in a tiny house, covering RV style hookups to self sufficient units. Tiny House builder John McFarlane will teach you all you need to know about hooking up your water systems & heating.

2. Composting toilets/marine style/ conventional systems

3. Alternative systems /Passive solar preheating/ on demand propane heating

Saturday August 9th (3 hour workshop)

Electrical Systems for Tiny Houses

Australian Electrician and tiny house builder Ben Garrett joins us to explains the ins and outs of various types of electrical systems used in tiny houses

1. Design & calculating load requirements

4.Battery installation and upkeep

August 10th (3 hour workshop)

Finishing the Exterior

Students will learn how to make all the finishing touches on the exterior of a tiny house in order to make it durable, weather proof and well...nice to look at!!

Staining Spraying Caulking

Saturday August 16 (3 hour workshop)

Sealing it Up: Insulation, Vapour Barrier, Panelling

Students will learn how to keep a tiny house cozy and insulated from the elements and will learn how to properly install panelling. 

1. R-values, and installing insulation

2. Vapour barriers and sealing up around openings

3. Non structural partition options

4. Discuss paneling options and procedures for their finishing and mention fire ratings

5. Pre-cut and finish materials outside of house

Sunday August 17th (3 hour workshop)

Flooring and Trim

Learn techniques for installing different types of flooring. Learn how to determine the value of salvaged flooring and the pros and cons of savlaged flooring vs. buying new.

1. How to refinish old flooring and make your own (what can be flooring/ how fancy do you want to get)

2. Other options like lino, ceramic, carpet and why it’s a bad idea.

3. Flooring in a loft including beading exposed underside

4. Installing trim such as baseboard cove crown and battens over joints in paneling

Saturday August 23 (3 hour workshop)

Details: Cabinets, counters, storage, ladders

Learn how to finish all of the interior details of a tiny house.

1. Benefits of using pre built vs built in cabinets

2. Installation from prefab cabinets vs built ins

3. Basic joint making for shelves and cabinets

4. Build a solid loft ladder

5. Trim

Sunday August 24 (3 hour workshop)

Fitting it out

Students will learn how to fit out a bathroom, kitchen and install/decide on ventilation and safety systems for the interior of a tiny house.

1. Toilets, sinks, Shower drains, taps, tanks

2. Water heaters, cook tops, Ventilation fans

3. Lights, outlets, switches.

4. Door and window locks.

5. Smoke and carbon detectors
